Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
Children's Orthopaedics - by Meg Birks

Consultants and their sub-specialities

Tim Theologis – CP (including single stage multilevel surgery) & Tumours

Andy Wainwright – Frames & general (inc CP, DDH, Tumours) (part academic)

Mr MK Benson – DDH is his special subject but he does most things (part time)


·    Number of middle grades and SHOs

2 SpRs, usually one fellow and an SHO


·    Number of T&O beds, ward names

The children’s unit is the old “Nani” ward and has 10-14 beds depending
on staff levels it is used for children’s rheumatology too.


·    Theatre facilities and timetable

1 ½ days per team (TT is one team and AW/MKB the other)


·    Particularly good teaching opportunities

CP clinic Monday pm – excellent MDT setting with great learning opportunities

Gait lab analysis meeting – very good grounding for the FRCS Orth

Wednesday am clinic – rather daunting at first but uniquely good experience


·    Tips on which boss can give which type of experience

AW – v good general training and exam orientated preparation

TT – excellent integration of basic sciences and clinical perspective

MKB – extraordinary knowledge and experience, encyclopaedic!

Nurses/Wards to go to/look out for, what is A&E like, who’s who
& where to park)

Be prepared for the x-ray card writing prior to the Wed morning clinic (100 ish sets of notes to read) best done Tues eve

See the patients prior to MKB’s list and read up on their condition/procedure

MKB is usually 5 mins earlier than he says he will meet you

DON’T forget the notes/xrays for the peripheral clinics!!!!

Beware of “surprise” Pre-op assessment patients appearing out of nowhere
